Free dental sterilizer spore test (BI) log

This printable record sheet is for dental offices in the United States to keep their spore test results, and it is free to use and print.

The rules, in brief

What the rules say

Points from CDC's dental infection-control guidelines and Florida's sterilizer rule. Each line names its source.

  • Test each sterilizer at least weekly with a biological indicator, and incubate a control from the same lot with it.(CDC, 2003 dental infection-control guidelines)

  • Put a biological indicator in every load that contains an implantable device, and hold the items until the result is known, whenever possible.(CDC, 2003 dental infection-control guidelines)

  • In Florida, steam and chemical vapor sterilizers need a spore test every 40 hours of use or every 30 days, whichever comes first. Dry heat and ethylene oxide sterilizers: every 120 hours of operation or every 30 days, whichever comes first.(Florida Administrative Code 64B5-25.003)

  • After a positive test, take the sterilizer out of service, repeat the spore test right away after loading it correctly and using the same cycle that produced the failure, and review the chemical and mechanical monitoring records since the last negative test.(CDC, 2003 dental infection-control guidelines)

  • If the repeat test is negative and the mechanical and chemical indicators are within normal limits, the sterilizer goes back in service. If it is positive, don’t use the sterilizer until it has been inspected or repaired or the exact reason has been found. Recall, to the extent possible, and reprocess the items processed since the last negative test. After the cause is found and corrected, run biological indicator tests in three consecutive empty-chamber cycles.(CDC, 2003 dental infection-control guidelines)
